FAQ

Is the Carbon-Ply ESR cost effective?
When applied as directed Carbon-Ply is the most cost-effective composite product available to the industry.

How would you describe the Carbon-Ply ESR System?

The Carbon-Ply ESR System is the only dry applied, carbon composite, monolithic, cross-linking repair system available to the industry.

I recently read that Clock Spring is monolithic, if so, how is Carbon Ply
ESR different?

Clock Spring starts with a monolithic pre-cured coil of fiberglass and resin, which is then applied to the pipe with adhesive between each successive wrap, creating a laminated repair.  Carbon Ply ESR process is  cast in place so
that the carbon fiber is impregnated with the resin material  and cured in one contiguous pour on the pipe.

How long do we have to wait to return the pipeline to full service?

The pipeline can be backfilled and returned to full pressure and flow immediately after installation is complete.  Installation is considered complete when the temperature of the repair returns to 130 degrees F. or less (54 degrees C.)

How long does it take to install Carbon-Ply ESR?
A trained installation technician with a helper can install Carbon-Ply ESR in les than one hour after grit blasting.

What is the operating temperature of Carbon-Ply ESR?
The standard Carbon-Ply ESR System can operate at a sustained temperature of 400 degrees F. (204 degrees C.) without any post-curing.

How many people are required to install Carbon-Ply ESR?
One trained technician with a helper can install Carbon-Ply ESR up through 20” however additional helpers will be required for mixing resin for larger sizes and /or long axial repairs.

What length of pipeline can be repaired?
Standard Carbon-Ply ESR kits are available for 12” and 24” widths; lengthening the repair area is done by connecting molds together to cover the longer areas.

Do I need a large excavation?
No, any Carbon-Ply ESR kit can be installed in an excavation as small as a two foot clearance on each side of the pipe and one foot under the pipe.  All excavations must meet OSHA requirements.

Do I need to protect Carbon-Ply ESR from UV or impact?
No, Carbon-Ply ESR has engineered UV and impact protection.

Is the Carbon-Ply ESR System odorous or have harmful aromatics like most other composite resins?
No, the Carbon-Ply ESR System is almost odorless and when installed as directed by the technical data sheets and MSDS’s, there is minimal opportunity for installer exposure or contact with the resin.

Are there any proprietary tools?

Yes, a few, but they are reusable with any size kit.

Is there a complicated clean-up requirement or hazardous disposal?
No, any cleanup can be accomplished with soap and water and disposal of fully cured left over material is the same as with any industrial trash.

Is it true that unidirectional fabric is better than bi-directional fabric?
Yes, circumferentially wrapped unidirectional fabric wrapped perpendicular to straight pipe restrains hoop stresses quicker than bi-directional woven fabric or diagonally (spiral) wrapped fabric which could allow more movement prior to loading.

Is Carbon-Ply a true technological advancement for the composite repair industry?
Yes, the Carbon-Ply ESR is the only dry wrapped carbon composite fabric that becomes a truly monolithic cross-linked repair.

Is Carbon-Ply a permanent repair?

Yes when installed as directed the Carbon-Ply Product is equal to the design life of the pipe.

Can I use Carbon-Ply above ground or on in-plant process piping?
Yes, due to its built-in UV and impact protection and high operational temperature characteristics it is ideal for industrial, refinery and other in-plant process piping applications.

How does the Carbon-Ply ESR System wet out better than other composites?
The current Market Perception
Fabrics have to be wet out or saturated by hand, using rollers etc.
Fabrics are difficult to wet out due to them being very densely weaved.
Resins have to be thin like water to wet out the fabric without a roller.
The only effective way to wet out a composite is in an OEM factory environment with sophisticated machinery, and then apply a pre-made form to the pipe with adhesive in the field.

21st Century Patented Technology is the Solution
Cross link Composites utilizes Carbon fiber technology with new special surface treatments on the fibers that rapidly promote wetting and compatibility by specialty epoxy resins.
Carbon-Ply resins have very low surface tension which in combination with the proprietary surface treatment on the carbon fiber allow wet out of the composite rapidly.
During the exothermic reaction of Carbon-Ply ESR the resin is warmed which causes the viscosity to drop significantly, this water like viscosity aids in the rapid wet out process.
Take the engineered properties of #1, #2 and #3 and add pressure to the equation the result is a phenomenal patented wet out process.

What does this mean to the Customer
A truly monolithic repair system that is stronger than the MAOP of the pipe itself that is easy and quick to install.
